When And Where To Catch Flathead.

When And Where To Catch Flathead.

2 minute read

Chasing Flathead is one of the most popular pastimes for many anglers around Australia because they Flathead love hitting lures, fight hard and are a very good table fish, if your are looking for a great fish fillet or two for dinner you'll need to know when and where to catch flathead.

The first thing to get right when chasing lizards is the when and the where.

Most often the lower stages of the tide is the best period to target flathead as they sit along drop offs and in holes, waiting in ambush for the end of the high tide to force baitfish and prawns off the sandbars and shallows. Ideally the last two hours of the run out and first hour of the run in will make for the most successful sessions.

As the tide gets lower the best fish areas will include channel edges, the edges of sand banks, the mouths of drains and structure in shallow water, from a few centimetres of water through to a couple of metres. Try to find large areas of sandbars that empty at low tide and concentrate your efforts around the edges where the last of the water comes off the sandbars and also any drains that may be washing the last off bit of water and bait off the sandbars.

During high tide flathead will often move into areas such as on top of sandbars that they can't access on the on the low tide and you will find them around the edges of high tide structures, such as along mangroves, rock walls and high tide drains, as well as anywhere across the sandbars and sand banks. Finding structure and bait are often the key to finding fish on high tide, so when searching on sand banks and broken weed sand bars that may not look fishy, the most important thing is to find any structure that may hold fish, including along weed patches, gravel, drop-offs or deep holes and watch out for any bait activity and try these areas while on the move.
