There's not much that beats the thrill of hooking a hard fighting tailor. The first few bites can often be mistaken for the wave action on the line, but when they take the bait and are hooked, tailor have a notorious ‘yank’ and fight really hard all the way to the net or beach.

It's important to look for the right place to catch the fish but also work out how you are going to land them before you begin a session. Look for channels and holes between the rocks where there is some cover from foamy water as the best spots to kook up.

Avoid using swivels or bulky knots in front of your lures as tailor have very sharp teeth and will bite these while you are playing fish, resulting in lost lures.

Different times of the day and night will bring different size category fish. First and last light is usually going to produce medium size fish and night fishing with poppers is the best way to find yourself onto a plus 3kg fish.

You want to concentrate fishing the few days after a full moon and make sure there is some swell that is creating some white wash to provide the cover the fish like to hunt under.
