The Two Best Soft Plastic Lure Retrieve Techniques.

The Two Best Soft Plastic Lure Retrieve Techniques.

3 minute read

In Australia soft plastic fishing is really popular and for good reason too. Fish love soft plastics and often your biggest fish will come while using soft plastics. Add their versatility, affordability and ability to easily mimic real food sources and you can understand why a lot of anglers are making the swap to soft plastics. Many people are interested in trying soft plastics but unsure how fish them. All you need to know is the best ways to get your lure working realistically in the water after you've casted it out. There are two main soft plastic lure retrieve techniques.

There are a bunch of different soft plastic lure retrieve techniques that anglers use and it's important to vary your retrieve until you find what works during any given session. However, the most popular retrieve technique used when fishing soft plastics is the hopping retrieve. It involves casting your lure out, allowing it to sink to the bottom and then at after it's hit the bottom, winding slack line in and lifting the rod tip to force the lure to hop along the bottom.

More precisely, once the lure has sunk to the bottom and while holding your rod horizontal to the water you need to very slowly wind in any slack line, to the point at which you can feel the slightest amount of tension without dragging the lure back towards you. At this point you then lift your rod tip from being horizontal to the water to roughly 60 degrees. This action lifts the lure from the bottom and depending on how vigorously you lift the rod tip will determine how quickly and how high the lure will hop. We suggest starting with a firm rod lift, but not a yank. Once you have achieved a roughly 60-degree lift, slowly drop your rod tip until it is again horizontal to the water, to allow the lure to sink to the bottom once again.

The second soft plastic lure retrieve techniques that is really effective is the slow roll. This retrieve is exactly how it sounds, it is a normal cast into fishy looking water, a sink of the plastic to your desired depth, depending on the size of the plastic and the weight of the jig head, and then the slow and steady retrieve back to the boat without any lifting of the rod tip. A slow, relaxed and flat retrieve back to the rod tip. It can actually be a lot harder than it sounds and sometimes you have to consciously slow down your retrieve as generally a bump or missed take will get your blood pumping and you will speed up your retrieve. You need to stay relaxed and slow it down. This retrieve is designed to impersonate a baitfish that is relaxed and not expecting a predator to be in the area.
