When float fishing most people load a float with weight without much thought to it. Hanging whatever weights are in their tackle box onto the line under the float. But only with the right weight for a particular given float, fishing conditions and other factors, you can count on success.
On every float there is a line or colour change on the top section of the float. This float line or coloured top section should act as the indicator for how deep the float should sit in the water. When weighted properly the only section of the float you should see is above that top line or colour change when the float is in the water.
If the float line is well above the water line and you can see half the float, then the float is sitting too high and their will be to much resistance against bites. Fishing a high sitting float makes it harder to detect little bites as it won’t go fully under the water. In this instance you need to get your float sitting deeper in the water column by applying more weight. Another problem with a high float is that the fish coming up and touching the bait will feel resistance and leave without taking the bait.
On the other hand, if the float line is below the water, you likely won’t be able to see much of the float at all, in this case your float is sitting too low and you will not be able to tell how big the bites are. To get your float sitting up higher use a lighter weight below it.
Test a float in a bucket of water or swimming pool to get it right before heading out as it's much easier than waiting to do it in the water you are fishing. Add weight's until you get the water line equal to the colour change on the float. If your fishing very calm conditions add a little more weight to let the water line rise just above the float line.
