deep water squid tactics

2 minute read

Most anglers fish for Squid on shallow inshore reefs or off the shore from piers or rocky headlands. There's another place to catch squid and often the bigger variety. Fishing the the deeper reefs that surround our coastline are often overlooked as they are hard to fish effectively. Reefs as deep as 30-50 metres most commonly that are well known for Snapper and Kingfish are also usually full of big squid. The problem is getting a jig down to the strike zone., many anglers don't even realise their are specialised jigs to help you fish this depth of water. Most anglers often try fishing these deeper areas with the squid jigs they currently own for the shallow inshore areas. These jigs would work great if it was possible to get them deep enough. The speed of drift due to current, tide or wind makes it sometimes nearly impossible to get your jigs down into the ideal strike zone which is around the bottom 3 metres of water.

The only way to fish these offshore, deep reefs is to go out and get your paws on a purpose designed “Deep” squid jig. These jigs are specifically designed for fishing deep and fast running water. They feature a much larger weight than your regular jig usually around 30g or so and often this is distributed within the body of the jig. Because of this extra weight these jigs sink really fast and it can be difficult to make your retrieve look natural. The best retrieve technique is to wind slowly four or five times and then to use your hand to put the breaks on the sink rate as you have the bail arm open. This will give a more natural action and stop the jig from dropping to the bottom like a rock after lifting the rod.
