Breakaway Sinkers

The next few months as the waters around Australia are warming up normally provide first-rate beach fishing. There will be many species on offer as well, including bream, whiting, tailor, salmon and mulloway. There's no one secret tip to help your beach fishing success. Rather success comes from a combination of tackle, technique, common sense and good luck that adds up to a lot of fun and hopefully a few fish

The breakaway is a lot of anglers favourite beach fishing sinker. It has the two most important qualities needed: it flys through the air well when casted, and it holds firm on the bottom in rough current and surf. The Breakaway sinker is a sinker fitted with grip wires, but unlike the conventional wired sinker the wires swivel within the sinker to release the sinker when either a fish bites or you strike to release them.

The wires are set prior to the cast and the rig sent out to sea. The wires will dig into the sand and give you a lot more grip than a conventional sinker. This is particularly handy when fishing clean sand patches in amongst the reef.

The wires have beads on them; these locate into slots moulded into the sinker when it is in the gripping position. When you are ready to wind in, just strike as if you were into a fish. This tug will break the wires out of their slots and allow you to retrieve the lead without it catching and snagging.

Although they are more expensive than regular sinkers, these leads will allow you to carry on fishing when everyone around you is washing up on the beach. I’d suggest you buy one, stick it into your tackle box, and next time you struggle to hold bottom, give it a go. You’ll find that they work really well.
