Bluefin Tuna are best in class when it's comes to sport fishing in the Tuna family. If your looking to get amongst these fish a good place to start is getting the best times and areas for bluefin Tuna before you set out on the chase. These guys can bite at any time of the day but most of the time they are more active in the morning and afternoon. During the middle of the day you are going to have to resort to locating a dormant school and trolling lures past their noses to wake them up.
As with most fishing strategies focusing your efforts on areas with bait and/or structure in the first objective. Although this can be harder to achieve compared to when fishing close to shore and or land based as there is so much ground to cover offshore. Towing your spread of lures through larger reef systems, hard changes in contour lines in well known feeding depths, and around islands are just a few places you may want to prospect. This will get easier the more sessions you have under your belt as you build up a knowledge of the area.
Even with all the hotspots marked out sometimes Bluefin are wherever you find them. When trolling, or even just cruising to the tuna grounds, make sure to always have your crew scanning the water looking for any signs of fish. Birds feeding is the most best sign you can have that Tuna are around, but broken water on a calm day can mean fish, while also check debris, current lines and anything that catches your eye as a structure. Even the smaller signs read correctly can at times point to a good school.
The last piece of the puzzle is correct use of your electronics. It may take a little investment of time but if you log all your good strikes and action each trip you will build up a database of information to use. Often retracing your movements from previous trips can lead to action. Additionally use your sounder to look for bait and tuna holding deep, and hang in that area to see if they rise, alternatively drop a jig to them or try berleying them up to the surface. Looking into sea surface temperature charts (SST) can also provide extra information to base your strategy on.
