Berley Pro Tips: There's more to berley than you think. A good berley should contain different densities of ingredients, so that it completely fills the water column at every level. For example you could include fish skeleton parts or crab shells to sit on the bottom, fish flesh to suspend mid water level, cereals which float close to the surface and oil to mesh the berley together and to spread the scent throughout each water level.
The best berley trail should ideally be ongoing and unbroken, and the aim is for the fish to be attracted from all different depths and then to follow the trail all the way to your boat. When berleying by hand make sure to introduce small amounts frequently. The old saying that a berley should be used to attract the fish and to not feed them is true, however, don't be afraid to incorporate chunks of whatever bait you are using as it can encourage the fish to take the larger pieces and one of those will contain your hook. It will allow the berley to penetrate the entire water column, and not merely float along near the surface.
Incorporating heavier chunks is also a great way to recycle all of the wastage that is on hand at the time from the last trip. Unused bait, out of date fish, fish skeleton, crab shells, prawn heads and shells can all go into the bucket to make the berley for the next trip. The lighter parts of the berley can come from any old out of date pantry items such as cereals, bread, corn flakes, cans of sardines, dog food, etc. Some people like to blend berley in a blender, if you do, try adding some heavier ingredients by hand afterwards, as well as some tuna or fish oil, then freeze it in individual containers which are the right size to fit your berley pot. This will let the berley thaw in the water, which can help with getting the berley to release slowly and last the entire trip.
