The best place to catch the famous barramundi, the Northern Territory is well known as one of Australia’s top fishing destination for hooking one of these iconic tropical fish species.

Since 2015 catching that metre Barra is not the only aim for anglers heading north to taste the action.

There is an awesome fishing competition that offers a million dollars worth of tagged fish to catch and it's called The Million Dollar Fish competition. Since it was first introduced in 2015 it has greatly boosted visitation to the NT and has given fishos the chance to reel in prize-tagged barramundi.

Renowned as Australia’s richest fishing competition, Million Dollar Fish continues to grow in size and value with more prize-tagged fish released each year. Barramundi are tagged and released right across the Territory in five main fishing regions including Arnhem Land, Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine and the Tiwi Islands.

Since the competition launched, dozens of fishos from around Australia have cashed in by reeling in tagged barramundi, and hundreds more have won epic prizes from competition partners.

The latest season of Million Dollar Fish ran from 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022. There were eight* Red Tagged Million Dollar Fish  active and 112 x $10,000 red-tagged Barra were released. 16 lucky fishos claimed $10,000 each, with 16 red-tagged fish claimed during Season 7.  In addition to $160,000 paid to fishos; $17,000 was donated across the 3 charity partners of Million Dollar Fish – Cancer Council NT, Shoreline and Starlight Children’s Foundation / Star Ball.

Million Dollar Fish Season 8 will run from 1 October 2022 – 31 March 2023. Registrations will open 1 September 2022.
