How to Hook a Live & Whole Squid

How to Hook a Live & Whole Squid

2 minute read

If you happen to be lucky enough to catch a squid that is the right size for a bait you will definetly want to hook it correctly to reap the full benefits of having it alive. Live squid can be very messy, especially the bigger ones. It is recommended to use of a glove or a towel to hold the squid as you attempt to set the hook. Now let's look at the best way to hook a live whole squid.

The best way to set the hook for live squid is to hook the top or tail of the squid. If using a large hook, it's possible to hook the tail twice for extra security. Setting up the hook in this location of the body provides enough strength to keep the squid on the hook. It also allows the live squid to swim freely and move its tentacles which will help attract fish. The aim is to get your hooked live bait to be able to present its natural movements in the water. This will improve results considerably.

If you can't get your hands on a good sized live squid, a whole squid bait that is frozen, can still bring great results when trying to catch large fish. The ideal rig is a snood rig which contains two large hooks that are set on top of one another. The goal of this rig is to successfully cover the top and bottom area of the frozen squid. Having the full hook coverage helps avoid any large fish from only eating half of the bait without getting successfully hooked.
